Brothers George W. and Harold D. "Bittie"
Skippers founded the Skipper Insurance Agency in 1940. During World War II, the boys
left the agency in the hands of their mother, Catherine Gaynor
Skipper and their sister, "Coo" Skipper McLeod.
A branch office on Government Street in Mobile was opened
in 1955. This office was closed in 1971 because computers made
it possible for the Mobile accounts to be handled in Jackson.
In 1989 the company began opening satellite offices
throughout south Alabama. Skipper & Associates, Inc., in
Citronelle, Ezell & Skipper Insurance agencies, Inc. in
Butler were both formed in 1989.
In 1990, Skipper bought Robertsdale Insurance Center as
well as a branch office in Daphne. These offices operated under
the name of Insurance Center.
In 1992, the Skipper family acquired Palomar Insurance
Corporation, a large regional insurance agency head-quartered in
Montgomery. In 1995, the Insurance Center of Daphne and Palomar
Insurance Corporation (Marine Division) merged to form Insurance
Center, LLC. This office then moved to Fairhope where it is
presently located.
